(CHC30121) Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
CHC30121 Course Overview
This qualification will teach you the knowledge and skills required to work in a team that provides education and care for children aged 0-5 years. You will learn how to support children’s development, learning and wellbeing in the early years. You will build quality relationships with children and their families. You will be given the opportunity to develop your skills in a regulated education and care service as well as studying online and attending classes on campus. You will gain a First Aid qualification.
You will be required to apply for registration to work with vulnerable people. This is called the Working with Vulnerable People Check (WWVP). Textbooks and a TasTAFE polo shirt for use on work placement will be supplied.

Early Childhood Education and Care qualifications at this level prepare you for work in a number of settings, including long day care centres, outside-school-hours care, vacation care programs, and family daycare.

Course Structure
This course is made up of blended delivery. It includes a balance of face-to-face classes on campus, some facilitated online study with a teacher and some self-paced online study. The study includes hands-on training in real Education and Care situations and centres. The study program includes various learning processes to encourage and improve learning.
Learning options may include:
- Participating in a work placement in an Early Childhood Education and Care environment
- Participation in workshops and a simulated Early Childhood Education and Care setting at TasTAFE. These will provide you with knowledge and skills, allow you to gain information from guest speakers and have opportunities to engage in practical learning tasks with fellow students
- Demonstrations of workplace skills
- Online learning – an online space that connects you to other students and provides you with information and tools to guide your learning.
- Learning support – to provide you with individual support with your learning
To achieve a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, 17 units must be successfully completed:

Assessment Process
Throughout all assessments, Work Health & Safety procedures must be followed. Options for assessment may include:
- Short written assessments – question and answer style tests
- Scenarios and Case studies with written responses
- Projects – group or individual, may be practical or research-based
- Research – research topics and provide a written response
- Practical – you will be observed doing tasks
- Work samples – you will be asked to complete tasks on the job and collect examples of your work
If required, other assessment methods may be used for students (eg. verbal tests instead of short written tests)
Entry Requirements
- 5.5 IELTS General Training (no band less than 5.0) or equivalent.
Recognition of Prior Learning
At TasTAFE we believe that the things you already know how to do should be formally recognised.
Regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred, you may be eligible to apply for recognition of your skills and experience. When you apply to attend TasTAFE you can ask for recognition of:
- schooling
- formal/informal learning
- life experience
- employment/work experience.
You may also be able to apply for credit transfer for units/modules that you have completed previously at another training organisation.
It is also possible to apply for credit for TasTAFE subjects if you decide to study at university.
