Taroona High School is a co-educational Junior High School for students in year 7-10. Situated in the Hobart suburb of Taroona, the school has direct beach access and overlooks the River Derwent.

Compulsory Subjects

Year 7 and 8: Mathematics, English, Science, History, Information Technology, the Arts (Music, Drama, and Art), Design and Technology (Design in Wood and Design in Metal), Vocational and Applied Learning, and Home Economics.

Year 9 and 10: English, Science, Mathematics, History and Health and Physical Education (in year 9), and a selection of elective subjects.

Elective Subjects

Students in years 9 and 10 are able to select subjects from a list of electives in a range of learning areas including: English, Mathematics, Science, Society and History, Health and Well-being (Athlete Development, Outdoor Education, Full on Fitness, Self Defence, Sports Science, Team Sports, Recreation), the Arts (Art, Craft and Design, Audio Design, Music, Drama, Graphic Design, Animation and Video Art, Film Production), Languages, and Digital Technology (Computing and Creative Media).

Taroona High School also offers Vocational learning programs for students in years 9 and 10 in learning areas such as hospitality, catering, woodwork, and design.

French, Chinese, Japanese and Italian.

Advanced Academic Programs

Advanced students have the opportunity to study Maths Methods (a Senior High School subject), as well as an “Introduction to Psychology” subject and Science Extended subjects.

Student Support

Provisions for International Students

International students are provided with a stationery pack. Textbooks and laptops are available to borrow from the school.

English Language Support

English as An Additional Language (EAL) support and individual assistance is provided by EAL teachers, counsellors, and other staff. Special activities are arranged so that students can learn about Tasmania and also about Australian culture. In addition, students can access English tuition through the ‘Language Lab; and; Language Perfect’ software programs.

International Student Advisors

International Students are supported by the school’s International Student Advisor (ISA). The ISA will help students settle into the school environment, assist with any concerns, talk with students about their study pathway, and help students locate career information.

Counsellors

Student support is provided by the school’s Grade Team Leader, Guidance Officer, Social Worker, and Chaplain.
